8 Storage Zoning Decisions for an Open-Plan HDB Interior
Test open-plan HDB storage zones with real contents, both cabinet faces and furniture in use.
Open-plan HDB interior design often joins living, dining and work activities visually. Storage can organise those activities without turning every boundary into a full-height wall. Before comparing Singapore renovation proposals, use these eight decisions to test what each storage zone holds, how it opens and what it does to the occupied room. Any proposed building alterations still require assessment for the actual flat.
1. Locate activities before cabinets
Mark dining, seating, work and arrival routines on the plan. Identify which happen at the same time. Storage should serve those activities where they occur rather than create arbitrary zones that leave the table, sofa or work surface awkwardly positioned after cabinetry is fixed.
2. Sort contents by point of use
List dining supplies, work equipment, toys and shared household items separately. Ask the designer to locate storage near the relevant activity. A large central unit may look efficient while requiring every user to cross another person's working or seating area to reach ordinary belongings.
3. Compare low and tall boundaries
Test low double-sided storage, a taller unit and a furniture-led option against the same contents. Review actual sightlines and routes. The lowest option is not automatically best, but its capacity and visual effect should be compared with the privacy or separation a taller element provides.
4. Show both faces of the unit
Ask for elevations and internal plans from each activity zone. Clarify which doors open where and how the reverse side is finished. Double-sided-looking cabinetry may simply have a decorative back, so useful capacity and access need to be explicit before its cost is compared.
5. Keep openings and services visible
Show doors, windows and existing access points alongside the storage. Ask the appointed team to assess any affected services or proposed alterations. A visual zoning idea should not rely on blocking a required access point or assume an existing wall can be changed without further checks.
6. Test simultaneous operation
Draw cabinet doors, dining chairs and work chairs in use. Walk through a scenario where someone retrieves an item during a meal or call. Closed elevations can conceal conflicts that become obvious when the same footprint is tested as an occupied room.
7. Coordinate power and equipment
List printers, chargers or media equipment within the storage. Ask how services, ventilation requirements and maintenance access are coordinated with the relevant suppliers. A cabinet used to divide activities should not leave equipment connections unresolved on the more visible side of the room.
8. Compare future configurations
Ask how a storage zone works if the desk moves or dining needs change. Identify fixed elements, removable shelves and freestanding alternatives. A convincing flexible layout shows a plausible second arrangement and the work needed to achieve it rather than applying a flexible label to permanent joinery.
An illustrative comparison
A double-sided divider separates dining from a home work area. Compare storage opening toward the table with doors opening toward the desk. Test chair movement and contents in both cases. The same external box can serve the household very differently depending on its access direction and how the two activities overlap.
Frequently asked questions
Must an open-plan home avoid full-height storage?
No. Compare its purpose, capacity, sightlines and routes against alternatives on the measured plan.
Can storage replace a wall in my flat?
Do not assume the existing wall is removable. Have the appointed team assess the actual structure, services and applicable requirements before proposing alterations.
