7 Material Schedule Checks Before You Approve Your Interior Design
A material schedule connects the design image to the products ordered and installed.
A material schedule connects the design image to the products ordered and installed. Use these seven checks before approving finishes across several suppliers or rooms.
1. List each location
Identify where every finish appears, including exposed edges, internal areas and adjoining surfaces. A general colour name is not enough to coordinate different suppliers. Ask for a room or drawing reference that makes each selection traceable.
2. Record the actual product
Request manufacturer, collection, colour and finish information appropriate to the item. Distinguish a named product from an allowance. Similar-looking samples may represent different constructions, care requirements or installation methods and should not be treated as interchangeable.
3. Review samples together
Compare flooring, cabinetry, paint, fabrics and metal finishes as a group in relevant light where possible. Approving each sample independently can hide an awkward combination. Ask which sample represents the final product and what variation is expected.
4. Identify preparation requirements
Have responsible installers assess substrates and proposed systems. Record any inspection-dependent work separately. A selected face material does not establish that preparation, supports or adjacent repairs are included in the quoted installation price.
5. Check junction details
Review edges, joints and transitions on the relevant drawings. Ask who coordinates two products meeting at one location. A material schedule should support those decisions rather than leave every supplier to interpret the interface independently.
6. Agree substitutes before purchase
Require current product information and the effect on appearance, cost and care when an alternative is proposed. Keep the approval recorded. A description such as equivalent finish should not replace a comparison against the actual selected specification.
7. Keep handover references
Retain final products, approved substitutions and care information. Identify responsible contacts for defects or replacement. These records remain useful after the design presentation and help avoid guessing which of several similar samples was ultimately installed.
