8 Owner-Supplied Item Decisions to Agree With Your Interior Designer
Owner-supplied renovation items need the same coordination as products bought through the project team.
Owner-supplied renovation items need the same coordination as products bought through the project team. Agree these eight decisions before ordering so responsibility does not fall between the owner, supplier and installer.
1. List the exact items
Create a schedule with model, finish, quantity and intended location. Distinguish shortlisted products from approved selections. A broad statement that the owner supplies fittings is not enough to coordinate the actual installation.
2. Confirm suitability and interfaces
Have responsible suppliers and installers assess relevant dimensions, connections and installation information. Ask what must be resolved before purchase. Do not assume a product is compatible because it resembles an item in the designer's reference image.
3. Allocate measurement duties
Identify who verifies the room, openings and any fabrication interfaces. Keep approved drawings with the selected product information. Owner approval of appearance should not be treated as technical confirmation of fit or installation suitability.
4. Agree ordering and timing
Coordinate delivery against the assessed programme and record current supplier assumptions. Ask what happens if an item is delayed or changes. An early order may still create storage or damage risks if the site is not ready to receive it.
5. Define installation scope
Specify who unpacks, assembles, fixes, connects or positions each item as applicable. Have the relevant parties assess the work. Separate labour, accessories and making good rather than assuming every task is included with supply.
6. Plan receiving and protection
Identify who accepts delivery, checks condition and stores the product. Review actual reporting procedures for damage or shortages. A supplier's delivery and a contractor's site role may cover different responsibilities.
7. Clarify fault and warranty contacts
Keep supplier and installer responsibilities understandable under the actual terms. Ask how a problem at their interface is investigated. Do not assume a general renovation warranty covers every owner-purchased product or a supplier covers installation by another party.
8. Control later changes
Require revised product information and relevant drawing checks before substitution. Agree any price or programme effect before extra work proceeds. Retain final references, instructions and responsible contacts at handover.
Example enquiry to adapt
Please record our owner-supplied products and allocate fit checks, ordering, receiving, installation and making good. Explain delay and fault interfaces and the approval process if a product changes after drawing sign-off.
Put the checklist into your comparison
