Parquet Flooring Singapore: Compare Retention, Repair and Replacement Scope

Parquet flooring decisions should start with the actual floor and the result you want. Before requesting quotations in Singapore, distinguish between retaining and refinishing an existing floor, repairing selected areas and installing a replacement. Those are different scopes even when all are described as parquet work.

Have the floor assessed

Show the contractor the full area, visible damage and any known moisture history. Ask which findings are confirmed and which require investigation. Do not assume every mark needs replacement or that every damaged area can be corrected by polishing.

Record what is being retained and which areas may need repair. Ask how loose or affected pieces and underlying conditions will be addressed. The proposal should explain its assumptions before a final finish is selected.

Define the replacement or repair material

If new material is required, ask for the actual timber or product specification, dimensions and finish. Clarify how it will match the retained floor and what variation is expected. A small sample may not represent the appearance of the completed area.

For a new installation, request the relevant manufacturer’s care and suitability information. Have the installer assess the base and room conditions. Avoid treating a timber appearance as proof of a particular construction.

Agree the finishing result

Ask what preparation and finishing are included and which existing defects may remain visible. Review the proposed colour and sheen using an appropriate sample or agreed reference. Keep the expectation realistic and documented rather than assuming a repaired floor will look newly installed.

Discuss access, furniture movement and when the area can be used according to the selected system’s guidance. Confirm protection of adjacent finishes and how work is coordinated with other trades.

Compare complete quotations

Check assessment, furniture handling, repairs, removal where included, preparation, installation or refinishing, skirting and cleaning. Identify provisional quantities and the process for extra work. Read product and workmanship terms separately.

Keep maintenance information

At handover, review the agreed scope and obtain care instructions for the installed finish. Retain product references and repair information for future work. Record any follow-up items with the contractor.
