8 Site Measurement Checks Before Your Designer Releases Fabrication Drawings
Site measurement should resolve the dimensions that affect the actual installation, not simply produce a room outline.
Site measurement should resolve the dimensions that affect the actual installation, not simply produce a room outline. Use these eight checks with the responsible project team before fabrication drawings are released.
1. Confirm the drawing version
Ask which current plan and survey information the team is using. Record later changes to the property or selected products. A drawing prepared before access to the unit may need verification before it becomes a fabrication instruction.
2. Identify the measured interfaces
List openings, corners, retained fittings and adjacent finishes relevant to the proposed work. Ask who verifies them and what remains inaccessible. A general room dimension may not resolve a cabinet, countertop or door junction.
3. Check selected products
Provide exact appliance, fixture, hardware and furniture references where they affect fabrication. Ask relevant suppliers to confirm installation information. Do not assume a nominal product size describes every connection, support or access requirement.
4. Record existing-condition limits
Ask the team to identify unevenness, concealed areas and other uncertainties they cannot confirm at survey. Agree how those are resolved before production or treated in the quotation. Avoid turning an uninspected assumption into a fixed promise.
5. Coordinate services locations
Have appropriate installers assess affected equipment, points and access. Check that the drawings use the same information. A cabinet elevation alone does not establish that plumbing, electrical or other service interfaces are resolved.
6. Show operating positions
Review doors, drawers, partitions and selected furniture in use. Ask whether the measured plan accommodates the actual movement and access needed. A closed-front elevation can hide conflicts between nearby products.
7. Allocate final approval
Identify who checks the coordinated fabrication drawing and which decisions the owner approves. Record outstanding questions before signing off. Clarify which professional or supplier assessment is needed rather than treating owner approval as technical verification.
8. Control changes after measurement
Agree how changed products or site conditions trigger review, pricing and revised drawings. Keep the final approved version with the order. Ask what must stop pending confirmation so an unresolved change does not pass directly into fabrication.
Example enquiry to adapt
Please identify the current survey and drawing versions, measured interfaces and unresolved conditions. Coordinate selected products and services before fabrication, and state who verifies technical information and approves later changes.
