A built-in wardrobe quote should reflect the storage you need inside the cabinet, not only the appearance of its doors. Before asking for prices, list the clothing, bags and other items it must hold and check how the proposed wardrobe works with the rest of the bedroom.

Start with storage quantities and daily use

Identify hanging clothes, folded items, drawers, luggage and occasional-use storage. Tell the firm whether two people share the wardrobe and whether their needs differ. This gives the internal layout a practical basis instead of simply dividing the cabinet into equal sections.

Provide the room plan with bed, bedside furniture, windows and switches. Ask the designer to show circulation and access when doors and drawers are open. Check the usable internal dimensions rather than relying only on the overall external size.

Compare sliding and hinged door proposals accurately

Ask each firm to explain the space, access and hardware implications of its proposed door system. Confirm the number of panels, tracks or hinges and the finish specification. Have the firm show how far each compartment can be opened and reached.

Do not compare a plain hinged wardrobe against a mirrored sliding-door design as if only the unit price differs. Request alternatives with their full specifications so the reason for the cost difference is visible.

Record materials, fittings and internal configuration

Ask for carcass, backing, doors, exposed panels and edge treatment to be specified. Count drawers and shelves and identify hanging rails, baskets or specialised accessories. Confirm hardware and any lighting provisions separately.

If the design includes mirrors or glass, request the actual product and installation details. Discuss cleaning and maintenance. Keep samples and product references linked to the approved quotation rather than selecting from a general showroom description alone.

Check installation and room interfaces

Ask whether skirting, existing cabinetry, uneven surfaces or obstructions affect installation. Confirm preparation, removal of old units, protection, transport, installation and making good. Identify any electrical work required for lights or moved points and who carries it out.

For a full-height wardrobe, review access to services and any necessary panels with the firm. Ask when final measurements are taken and which dimensions remain provisional. Confirm how a quantity change will be approved before fabrication.

Approve the drawing before production

Review external elevations and internal layouts together. Check door movement, drawers, handles and the selected finish. Ask for the programme, payment stages, variation process and aftercare terms before committing.

At handover, check the supplied configuration and operation against the approved record. List concerns and agree a rectification process. Keep warranty and maintenance information with the final drawings.

Frequently asked questions

Does a longer wardrobe always provide more usable storage?

No. Internal depth, compartment arrangement and access matter. Assess the design against the items you need to store.

Should I choose doors by appearance alone?

Consider room clearance, access, hardware, maintenance and the cost of the complete system as well as appearance.
