Ceramic Tiles Singapore: Match the Product to the Room Before Comparing Prices

Check ceramic tile suitability, finish, variation and installation details. Build a product schedule your renovation firm can quote accurately.

Ceramic tiles in Singapore are sold in many formats and finishes. The useful question is not simply whether ceramic is good, but whether the exact product is appropriate for the location and installation. Compare the product information and finished work together before choosing by price or appearance.

Explain how the room will be used

Tell the supplier whether the tile is for a wall or floor and describe likely water exposure, traffic and cleaning. Ask for the manufacturer’s application guidance and relevant product information. A wall product should not be assumed suitable for flooring.

For bathrooms and kitchens, discuss texture, cleaning and wet-use suitability with the supplier and renovation firm. Do not treat a marketing phrase as proof of performance. Ask which documented properties support the proposed use.

Review the selected finish in person

Look at several pieces together, including edges and surface texture. Ask how much colour, tone or pattern variation to expect. Check the appearance under planned lighting and alongside grout, cabinetry and other finishes.

Record the exact code, size, finish and batch arrangements in the material schedule. If a sample is substituted, have the replacement approved before installation. A similar colour can conceal differences in dimensions or edge treatment.

Coordinate the laying details

Ask for joint widths, grout colour, exposed-edge trims and the start point of the pattern to be agreed. Review cuts around openings, corners and fittings. Where the tile meets another finish, show the transition rather than leaving it as a general instruction to make good.

Have the contractor explain the substrate and preparation required. Existing surfaces and levels need assessment before choosing removal or overlay. For wet areas, clarify the waterproofing scope and responsibility at penetrations and junctions.

Compare the full supply-and-install scope

Check quantities, cutting allowance, delivery, protection, removal, disposal, preparation, adhesive, laying, grout and cleaning. Ask whether skirting and trims are separate. Identify provisional items and how further work will be quoted if the base condition differs from assumptions.

A contractor’s broader viewpoint is useful when tile choices interact with the rest of the renovation. RS Carpentry’s linked tiling guide is one such reading resource; the final product and method should still be confirmed for your property.

Approve a clear specification

Keep the product schedule, laying plan and quotation together. At handover, inspect the completed finish with the firm and obtain the care instructions and remaining spare tiles agreed in the contract.
