Interior Designer or Renovation Contractor: Which Service Should You Quote For?

Compare interior-design and renovation-contractor proposals by design, drawings, sourcing, coordination and construction responsibilities rather than job titles.

When comparing an interior designer with a renovation contractor, start with the services you need rather than assuming the titles describe identical roles. Ask who develops the layout, prepares drawings, specifies materials, coordinates trades and remains responsible for delivering the construction scope.

Identify the decisions you want help with

List the areas where you need support: space planning, storage design, finish selection, lighting coordination or management of the work. Tell firms how much of the design you have already decided and which questions remain open.

If you have detailed plans, ask whether the firm can build to them and what further drawings or assessments are required. If you only have inspiration images, ask what design development is included before a construction price can be finalised.

Compare the actual deliverables

Ask each proposal to describe consultations, layout revisions, production drawings, visualisations, material selections and site coordination where relevant. Confirm how many revisions are included and what an additional service costs.

For construction, compare room scope, quantities, specifications and installation responsibilities separately. A design-inclusive proposal may contain services absent from a construction-only quotation. Make those differences visible before judging the total price.

Understand who coordinates the trades

Ask who schedules electrical, plumbing, wet works, carpentry and other installers. Establish who resolves interfaces and checks the work against the agreed plans. If you appoint some trades directly, confirm how that affects the main firm’s responsibility and programme.

Identify your main contact and the person with authority to approve site decisions. Discuss update frequency, documentation and cover during absences. Do not assume the salesperson remains the project coordinator after the contract is signed.

Check fees, supply and ownership of the record

Clarify design fees, construction charges, procurement services and any other separately priced work. Ask what happens if you decide not to continue from the design stage into construction. Read the actual payment, cancellation and usage terms before committing.

Confirm which drawings and specifications you receive and may use under the agreement. Record owner-supplied products and who checks their dimensions, installs them and handles issues. Avoid leaving coordination gaps between design intent and what the installers price.

Apply the same business and contract checks

Verify the exact contracting entity and relevant registrations or accreditation for the proposed work. Review recent comparable projects and the team’s role in them. A service title alone is not evidence of the necessary capability or qualification.

Compare payment milestones, exclusions, variations, programme, handover and aftercare. Ask for written answers to the same questions from each firm. Choose the proposal that covers your needs with responsibilities you can understand and assess.

Frequently asked questions

Is a direct contractor always cheaper?

Compare equivalent services and specifications. A lower construction-only total does not establish the cost of design or coordination you still need.

Can a contractor also provide design services?

Some firms offer several services. Ask for the specific deliverables, team and fees rather than relying on the company’s label.

Request the service scope you actually need

Prepare your floor plan, design starting point and preferred level of support. Browse renovation company directory or share your brief at request free renovation quotes. Ask firms to distinguish design, coordination and construction in their proposals.
