A custom carpentry quotation should tell you what will be built, how it will be measured and which materials and fittings are included. Comparing only a price per foot run can hide differences in depth, internal arrangement, hardware and installation scope.

Identify each built-in item separately

List kitchen cabinets, wardrobes, shoe storage, study units and other built-ins by location. Request dimensions and a drawing for each item. Ask whether the measurement includes full-height panels, end panels, fillers, returns and exposed sides.

Check whether upper and lower cabinets are priced independently and how unusual shapes are measured. Have the firm explain the basis for the quoted quantity before comparing it against another proposal. Keep provisional dimensions clearly marked until final site measurement.

Match construction and finish specifications

Ask for the carcass, backing, door and surface finishes to be described. Record relevant thicknesses, product references and visible edge treatment where these affect your decision. A sample can communicate appearance, but it should correspond to the written specification.

For wet or service areas, discuss suitability and maintenance with the firm. Avoid treating a generic material name as a guarantee of performance in every location. Ask what construction and installation details are intended for the actual use.

Specify the internal layout and hardware

Count shelves, drawers, hanging sections and specialised fittings. Identify hinges, runners, handles and mechanisms by an agreed specification. Ask which fittings are included in the base price and which are upgrades.

Review access and everyday use before approving fabrication. A visually symmetrical elevation may not store your appliances, shoes or clothing effectively. Ask the designer to show internal clearances and explain trade-offs while changes are still straightforward.

Clarify interfaces and installation responsibilities

Check who prepares walls and floors, provides supports, makes electrical provisions and completes touch-ups around the carpentry. Confirm appliance openings and access to service points. Identify countertops, glass, lighting and other adjacent items that may be supplied by different trades.

Ask who coordinates measurements when several installers are involved. Confirm transport, protection, installation, debris removal and applicable tax. A cabinet-only supply price is not equivalent to a complete installed scope.

Approve the production record and aftercare terms

Before manufacturing, review final drawings, finishes, hardware and dimensions. Ask how later changes affect the price and schedule. Keep the approved documents with the quotation and identify the person authorised to sign off on them.

At handover, inspect the agreed configuration and operation, record concerns and confirm the rectification process. Check warranty coverage, exclusions and maintenance guidance for the supplied materials and fittings.

Frequently asked questions

They may include different cabinet runs, panels or measurement methods. Ask each firm to mark the priced quantities on its drawing.

Can I select hardware after the quotation?
